Discover your Audiences

Scientific audiences are a varied bunch: They include students, peers at other universities, business leaders, elected officials, journalists, children, and more. It is important to connect with each audience and align their goals with yours.

Designing your Message

My dissertation was over 10,000 words. But who has time for that? The way you organize your message, or narrative, depends on your audience and your goal.

Delivering your Presentation

When presenting scientific information, you have a lot of strategic and tactical choices you can make to ensure that your audiences get what they need.

Hi, I'm Marlit Hayslett, PhD and I am a communication coach for scientists. My work focuses on the strategic and technical "how to" of communicating complex information clearly.

My career started in science policy at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. After working with state policymakers for several years, my professional focus pivoted to the challenge of communicating complex information to non-specialist audiences. At the University of Virginia, I taught hundreds of graduate students how to communicate their research with enthusiasm and clarity.

With an insatiable appetite for learning, I earned my BS and MS in International Affairs and an MS in Public Policy from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a PhD in Mass Communication from the University of Georgia.

"Nothing in science has any value to society if it is not communicated."
